ENERGY STAR Isn't the Only way to Save

While a national energy policy remains a debated topic, one thing on which we all can agree is the need to reduce energy consumption in our homes. One of the best-known ways for homeowners to do that has been to invest in appliances and materials rated as ENERGY STAR® compliant.

The ENERGY STAR program, created in 1992 by the Environmental Protection Agency, generally has been judged a success in encouraging energy conservation. However, recent news reports have suggested that ENERGY STAR products may not be as efficient as once thought. There are several easy ways to conserve energy and save money

In fact, McMillin makes it easy by including a number of energy-saving features into its homes, including radiant barrier roof decking, programmable thermostats, and blown-in insulation. Better yet, there are many things you can do on your own that require little or practically no effort (or cost). A few good examples are:

  • In the summer, keep your drapes or window shades closed during the day; in the winter, keep them open. Amazingly, windows can account for up to 25% of your heating and cooling bills.
  • Use a single power strip for electronics and turn it off when they're not being used. Thanks to standby power (or "phantom load"), the average family spends a good deal of money on gadgets that are supposedly "off."
  • Wash only full loads of laundry and use cold water. Most of the energy used in a clothes washer is for heating the water.

In short, you don't have to rely exclusively on energy-efficient appliances or ENERGY STAR features to help you conserve energy and save money. With a McMillin home, some of those savings are built in, and taking a few extra steps on your own can add up.
